Spider-man: Alternate Ending Explained

With Spider-man: Far From Home putting the world in a spin the web has just received reports on what the original ending for the film was supposed to be.

Throughout this, I’ll be breaking down everything that you need to know about the alternate scene as well as why it was changed.

There will be heavy spoilers here, so if you haven’t see Far From Home yet and don’t want to have anything ruined then I highly recommend that you turn off now.

Spider-Man: Far From Home: Original Ending Explained

Ok so in the original ending of Spider-man: Far From Home, Mysterio is revealed to be a disgruntled ex-employee of Tony Stark who, along with others, has been trying to get access to his tech. Early in the film, Peter, who doubts his own abilities, hands over the EDITH glasses which grant the wearer access to Starks arsenal and with these now in the clutches of Mysterio, he is able to launch a massive attack on Tower Bridge.

Peter rushes there, manages to defeat Mysterio who seemingly dies though don’t believe everything that you see on the internet and he returns home after saving the day and getting the girl of his dreams. Peter swings through the city with MJ and all seems great until a live broadcast of Fake News from The Daily Bugle.net reveals that Mysterio or one of his cohorts has created some fake footage that shows his identity as Peter Parker.

Whilst we cut to black, this scene actually played out a lot differently in the original ending of the film with the writers, though coming to the same conclusion, revealing Peter’s identity to the world in a different way.

Far From Home Alternate Ending Breakdown

When speaking to the New York Times recently, co-writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna stated the initially Peter’s identity reveal was going to be part of the final act of the movie instead of just part of the post-credits scene.

In the interview they stated:

“With Mysterio, there were versions of the story where he was at the forefront as an out-and-out villain that Peter and Nick were chasing around Europe as he pulled off these events,” McKenna reveals, “all building to this back story of why he was doing it, which was a wholly different third act. We went down a lot of different roads.” “[Ultimately], because Mysterio deals so much in deception,” Sommers adds, “it was sort of natural that it led to a story structure where his entire identity was a mislead for a while.”

“We were challenged by the producers to come up with something that Peter sacrifices by the end of this movie, and when we hit upon that as a group, it became a very scary idea: ‘Oh, no, we can’t do that! Then it’s not a Spider-Man movie anymore! It’s such a bold maneuver that it became inevitable, particularly with a tricky character like Mysterio, who’s this dark father figure. From the grave, is he trying to give Peter his ‘I’m Iron Man’ moment? It’s thrust upon him, but is this a lesson or a punishment?”

“We played with the idea that Peter is the one who sacrifices his identity out of necessity during the final battle. Then it seemed more interesting if Mysterio tricks him into doing it, but any time we wrote a version where he was being revealed to the world in that battle, it felt like it diminished the victory.”

“Before it became a tag, it was really just the end of the movie: right as he feels he’s stepping up as Spider-Man, he has the rug pulled out from under him again,” he added.

Peter Parker’s Identity Revealed

So it seems like Mysterio was going to use Peter being gullible again to reveal who he was similar to the scene earlier in the movie where he accidentally gave up Ned and MJ’s identity to Beck during the Skyscraper fight.

What really hits home with me is that they talk about Peter sacrificing his identity out of necessity which could have meant that Mysterio held some of Peter’s friends hostage and therefore forced him to reveal who he was to the world in order to save their lives.

Whilst I think this would have been cool to see I definitely think the post-credits scene stinger works a lot better as not only does it compromise Peter’s identity it also sets him up as a target for both heroes and villains as the world will believe that he killed Mysterio and has been orchestrating the attacks.

The fact that he has EDITH, of course, gives him access to this and many will no doubt worry that he now he too much power, especially for his age which of course sets up Civil War 2 potentially with Captain Marvel trying to take this back. Personally, I think the ending that we got works a lot better and it’s easier to see why it made it to the final cut as this original ending allows Peter to become the hero which no doubt is not what Mysterio wanted, hence the reveal.

J.K. Simmons Cameo

In addition to all of this, there was also some discussion over the post-credits scene and getting J.K. Simmons involved in which the writers said.

“There had already been some interest in possibly using J.K. Simmons when we brought J. Jonah back, so once it was decided that we were going to reveal Peter’s identity at the very end instead of the final battle, it all fell into place very naturally that J. Jonah would be involved.” McKenna added, “Something that had been floating through this entire movie was the idea of ‘fake news’ and how can you believe everything you see? We had been toying with the idea that Mysterio would turn Spider-Man into a villain, just like he did in the comic books, and it felt like that then tied into this J. Jonah 2.0 as the Alex Jones of the MCU.”

Originally Nick Fury and Maria Hill were not Skrulls either, however, the writers felt that it would be a disservice to Fury to have him tricked by an illusionist when he is supposed to be one of the world’s most cunning spies.

Overall I definitely think the changes work a lot better and this film really got me hooked on what could come down the line. It was a smart move for the film to play out the way it did and I really can’t wait to see what’s next for the webhead.
