Civil War 2: Captain Marvel Graphic Novel Review

After reading the main run and several of the side stories connected to Civil War 2, I have to say I’m really enjoying it.

Though it doesn’t quite live up to the stature of its predecessor, it’s still a really fun ride that has a lot to talk about.

Throughout this review we’ll be going through one of the main players in the run and seeing things from her point of view.

Captain Marvel pretty much comes out winning and thus we’ll be breaking down whether the storyline and book itself feels like a hollow victory or a worthwhile win.

There will be some spoilers here so if you don’t want anything ruined then I recommend that you skip to the score.

With that out the way, thanks for clicking this, now let’s get into Captain Marvel: Civil War 2!

Alpha Female

We open with Carol celebrating her appointment as the Alpha Flight leader. Since the events of Civil War #1 the world’s council has been curious over how the Avengers managed to stop the world from being destroyed and the opening very much explores Carol’s relationship with them and her boyfriend “Rhodey.”

It laces the introduction with a hint of tragedy as we of course know that he dies in the main run and seeing the pair together really makes you feel for her as you know what’s coming.

When it does hit, she’s torn between her duty and emotions and it makes her far more relatable than I’ve seen in any other depiction. Whilst the book does sort of hamfistedly add a Minerva rivalry in there in order to provide action, Carol mourning the loss of the man she loved is the real heart of the book and it makes the Civil War far more engaging with this aspect added.

Predictive Justice

The second part of the book centres around the politics of condemning people based on what they may or may not do.

We watch first hand as Carol arrests those that would probably never commit a crime on the off chance that they may, and this really paints her out in a questionable light.

What I loved about the initial Civil War arc is that you really could choose either side and be in the right. With the sequel it’s very clear that Tony is the one who is correct and though a criticism that is often levelled at the book is that Carol is clearly wrong, that doesn’t mean it’s not fascinating to read.

She is clearly still trying to do the right thing and probably gets in too deep with it, leading the reader to really question what they would do in her shoes

I found this really gripping to read and it even throws her into conflict with her own forces.

Captain Marvel Vs Alpha Flight

After Carol is told by Ulysses that she will end up battling Alpha Flight, she inevitably does because the tension of knowing this information causes her to second guess their motivations which of course leads to an all out brawl.

It shows that Ulysses’ predictions may actually be instrumental in making the future follow the path they portray and it really adds a lot of weight to the main storyline.

There’s a new villain pulled out at the last minute but it’s set up pretty well and it leaves the ending of the story with a good action scene to close out the book.

The Verdict

Overall this is definitely one of the best side stories in the Civil War Saga. With this graphic novel Captain Marvel went from being a character that I couldn’t agree with on any level to having understandable motives that I think most will relate to.

It definitely helps to flesh out the main storyline and should be one of the books that you pick up immediately after you finish the main arc

This was great and it gets an…
