WANDAVISION Breakdown: Why Agnes Was Faking It | Theories And All The Agatha Harkness Clues

Agnes is one of Wandavision’s most enigmatic characters and throughout the entire show there just seemed like something is off about her. Whether it’s her ability to break character when no one else could, the constant witch puns that would make Kevin Spoilers blush or the fact she seems unphased by Wanda’s magic, something just isn’t right.

In the latest entry, Vision came face to face with her without Wanda in the way and in doing so learned about his death as well as The Avengers.

Now the scene has a lot to unpack from it and throughout this, we’re gonna be breaking down why Agnes was acting so weird as well as who she could really be and the evidence to support it.

Heavy Spoilers ahead so if you’re someone who doesn’t wanna know the devil in the details then I highly recommend you take your Westviews somewhere else.

Truth is Out

Episode six sort of has two storylines going on in it. Firstly is Monica’s mission at the Sword facility and the second centres around Wanda losing her Vision…like Daredevil.

Throughout the season we’ve watched as the mechanical man slowly started to uncover the truth about Westview and in the episode, he reached the perimeter of the city before journeying outside of it.

Along the way, he encountered Agnes and stopped to talk to her before breaking through the barrier. This tore him apart and he was left feeling like I do every Friday when the please standby thing comes on screen. However, he was saved by Wanda as she expanded the Hex and left everyone looking the way I do after saying Mephisto was behind it all for the last six weeks.

There were a lot of things going on here that could indicate it was all part of Agnes’ plan to have the hex envelope those around it to stop Sword and give her more time to enact her plan.

Agnes isn’t Hexed

The first indicator that it was all an act is set up by the people around the edge of Westview.

These people were completely frozen and totally unresponsive.

However, when Vision approaches Agnes and asks her what she’s doing there she actually responds and asks where the town square is. Up until this point, absolutely everyone else had been frozen and thus this seems to indicate that she might be pretending to be in a trance and simply have parked up on the outskirts to draw Vision to it.

We also see that she’s parked on Ellis Avenue which Wanda warns about people going to earlier in the episode hinting at something else. Agnes asks where the town square is and says she got lost but at this point, she is likely familiar enough with Westview to know that it isn’t this way and thus we can assume that she purposely drove in the wrong direction.

Agnes Plants the Seed of Doubt

Vision uses the mind stone to snap her out of it and the conversation very much comes across as Agnes planting the idea in his head that he should leave through reverse psychology. She firstly questions how it’s even possible that he could leave which likely challenges him to do it and then states that Wanda doesn’t even let them think about it.

This contradicts Doctor Nielson in episode 3 who of course was obsessing over his trip to Bermuda Baby. Another thing that Agnes does here is that he clearly throws Wanda under the bus and mentions her by name.

Though Norm did specify that a woman was controlling it all, he didn’t say Wanda specifically and therefore his cries could also apply to Agnes and Dotty.

Agnes begins to cackle…like a witch and then Vision puts her back under and she continues to drive off, this time well aware of where she’s supposed to be going. Thought you were lost? An interesting thing is that she also reaches for her broach which isn’t there and potentially this could stop her from falling under the spell of Wanda’s mind control but we don’t know.

Now I think the more you watch this scene the more you realise she’s just planting the idea in Vision’s head that he needs to exit the Hex as he’s likely getting too close to unearthing the truth behind Westview.

This is a similar play to what she did with Geraldine or rather Monica in episode 3 and I think the fact she likes to turn people on one another hints at the overall show aesthetic.

Who is the  Villain?

Unlike the other Marvel properties that have come before it, Wandavision doesn’t have a clear villain and thus we can take it that it’s because they operate behind the scenes and try to convince people otherwise.

Falcon and The Winter Soldier isn’t even out yet and we already have a fair idea that Flagsmasher, US Agent and Zemo will be the big bad in it yet we’re almost at the end of this and still have no idea.

Thus we kinda have to look at the characters who seem to be operating with ulterior motives and Agnes definitely fits the bill.

Though Quicksilver has been thought to be secretly either Mephisto or Nightmare I think the Halloween episode in many ways could prove that he’s not. All of the characters appear in Halloween costumes that portray who they are in the comics and as Evan Peter appears in the classic Speedster suit, it’s probably him.

Agnes, however, appears as a Witch and thus she is likely Agatha Harkness, a powerful one in the comics that is linked heavily with Wanda.

Agatha Harkness

In the source material, Agnes is thousands of years old and she has both worked with the heroes of the Marvel universe and against them. Wanda did kill her at one point, though she came back as a spirit before fully returning, but she does have a precedent of switching sides.

There are a lot of clues to Agnes being one and the same including her name. If you take the first and last syllables of Agatha Harkness and push them together you get her name.

Her broach also appears to be similar to the comic book counterpart but the similarities go far beyond that. Personally, I believe that Wanda went to Agnes after the death of Vision and slowly she sunk her teeth into her. Like in the comics she helped her to enhance her abilities and told her that it was possible to live out the perfect life with her husband in this fabricated reality.

Slowly she preyed upon Wanda’s grief until she hit a breaking point and thus the Hex was born. However, she had to keep Wanda in this reality so that she could do INSERT WHAT HER MISSION IS IF SHE EVEN HAS ONE IF YOU’RE WATCHING THIS IN THE FUTURE.

Agnes is Agatha Clues

There were several clues to this, especially in her many appearances.

When she first arrives she says the words charmed which link to witches and also mentions that her wedding anniversary is the second of June which was the first date of the Salem witch trials.

She also does a weird wave of the hand almost similar to what a witch does and I’m doing something with my hand now because I’m reaching very hard.

In episode 2 the introduction has two clues and the first comes in the supermarket. We can see an advert for Kitty litter that says Auntie A’s. Agnes refers to herself as this in Episode 5 and like Kitty litter, she’s full of sh*t.

The animation also has her appearing inside the house along with Vision and Wanda whilst everyone else waits outside, perhaps showing that she has access whereas they don’t.

They also have the ‘devil in the details’ bit which we’ve milked more than Wandavision theory videos themselves but that’s more evidence to add to the pile.

We know from the trailers of episode 3 that there was supposed to be a scene in which she was riding along on a bike. Though it looks like this was cut I actually think that it might appear in a flashback episode in which we see things from Agnes’ perspective. This is similar to how we thought that the scene in which Monica was thrown out of the Hex ended up on the cutting room floor when in reality it was shown when we saw the episode centred around her.

In this episode, she ended up shutting Herb down from telling the truth and when SWORD was compiling IDs for the characters in the sitcom she was the only person they were unable to get one for. This contradicts the comment in Episode 6 in which Vision says that she’s lived there her whole life but because of this we know she hasn’t.

Episode 5 shows some of the biggest clues as she clearly breaks character in front of Vision, likely to get him to start suspecting things. This would make them question one another and then she could bring across Evan Peter’s Quicksilver so that Wanda focuses more on that rather than the bigger problems at hand.

She’s also present both times the kids grow up and is there when they almost do on the third go. However, Wanda talks them out of it but if you ask me Agnes probably killed the dog Sparky in the hopes that they would.

She’s got a poisonous bush you don’t wanna eat from.

Wanda also has no issue using her powers in front of Agnes, potentially because she subconsciously has already done it in the outside world.

All the pieces slowly start to fit into place once you look at the big picture and I definitely think the evidence lines up that she’s actually doing it.

Now obviously I’d love to hear your thoughts so make sure you comment below and let me know.
