Overhyped?
With great hype comes great responsibility, oh wait that’s the wrong movie… I’ll save that for July.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol2. hit cinemas last week with a BIG crowd anxiously awaiting the follow up to James Gunn’s masterpiece, vol 1. I highly rate the first outing, placing that particular film in my top 3 that Marvel have created, wrestling with The Winter Soldier for the number 1 spot and sitting just above Civil War.

So with this said, I had high expectations for the follow up, and wondered if any film can adapt and reach the perceptions projected from the internet age?

Better Than The First?
That question I cannot answer, but the reviews and fans response have been overly positive so far and from my point of view, this film is a success. It has a great opening, a lot of laughs (a lot), has heart and a marvellous third act which will impress even the seasoned MCU fan. The pacing slows in the middle, which I know may not be to the liking of most movie goers, but it tells a vital part of the story so stick with it.

Does it live up to the levels set by the first? I’d say yes in certain aspects, but not entirely.

The laughs are taken up a notch, the film expands on the group’s relationship and takes Marvel even further out into space than it has ever been, opening the door for the Mad Titan in Avengers: Infinity War. So yes, please go and see this film, you won’t regret it.

I cried like a baby in the third act, if you manage to hold it together then you are a heartless animal who deserves everything you get….. sorry I’m still feeling the pain from what happens.

The film starts out with the gang fighting a space monster whilst Baby Groot sets the standard with an amazing scene I wasn’t ready for. My smile was ear to ear. It slows up a lot in the middle as we are introduced to Ego, Star Lord’s Father. It’s a necessary halt, as it wants to focus on the story rather than action sets. The problem with this though, is that the film has been moving at a fast pace to this point, and the slow up feels a little bit of a stretched one. It tells a vital part of the story, just done slowly so that you can feel at ease, like Star Lord. The third act was amazing, I want to see it again, it had everything that you could possibly want from a film. Wow.

There are some great cameos, Sylvester Stallone shows up as Starhawk, one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy. If you want to know anything from the comics, it is that the current roster is not the original and Sly plays one of the original lot! Apparently Marvel will tanget using him beyond this film and I do hope so!! Adam Warlock will be unleashed in vol3.!! In one of the after credit scenes which sets up yet another sequel. Baby Groot, Drax and Yondu steal the show!!

I very much enjoyed this film and can’t wait to see it again. Does it knock the first one off of its pedestal? Probably not, but that is not a bad thing as it joins it in creating a great movie experience. It certainly sits in the top 5 Marvel films but I’d need time to reassess the list!!
