DCEU OVER! Henry Cavill And Ben Affleck Out! New James Gunn Plans Explained

Ok so after last week’s big DC announcement I went to bed this week thinking that things would work themselves out and that it was gonna be fine. Over the weekend we had a number of things happening and I actually used the powers of cognitive reason to work out why Henry Cavill had to be staying as Superman in the DCEU.

Now listen in. So, here’s what I thought. James Gunn is married to Jennifer Holland.

Holland plays Harcourt in Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and Also Black Adam. Black Adam ends with a tease towards Superman and therefore the only way that Henry was out was if Gunn had decided to ruin his marriage and make it so that all the movies his wife is in don’t matter anymore. Though there’s no way that’s happening.

Then Josh from Den of Nerds put out a tweet saying that James Gunn doesn’t like Henry Cavill which Gunn actually debunked, dealing out one of the most brutal ratios of all time.

So, I thought the guy is safe.

However, turns out that was a f**king like, and Henry Cavill has been kicked to the curb after only just announcing that he was back.

It’s a f**king s**tshow.

Henry was like Black Adam; we need to talk…we’re both out the DCU.

F**ks sake.

As I always say, if you’re gonna be a DC fan you’re Gunna have a bad time and throughout this video we’re gonna be breaking down Henry Cavill’s post, James Gunn’s replies and also talking about the implications of this. I really think that the Snyderverse is definitely over at this point as we have Cavill Out, Momoa is probably Lobo and judging by James Gunn’s comments Affleck is possibly gonna be brought in to direct.

Anyway, we’re gonna be getting into it all and please hit the thumbs-up button if you enjoy the video and don’t forget to subscribe breakdowns like this every day.

With that out the way, huge thank you for clicking this. Now let’s get into the video.

Henry Cavill is no longer Superman

Ok so last night Henry Cavill Posted this:

So kinda crushing especially due to the fact that Cavill just quit the Witcher in order likely give his full attention to his return as Superman. The guy has been messed about so much over the last decade or so and after first donning the cape for 2013’s Man of Steel he’s been sort of brushed to the side. Superman should be the flagship character, but he was swept under the rug, and he became Schrödinger’s Supes for several years where we didn’t know whether he was in order out. However, hope…hope came back with Black Adam, and it seemed like Cavill was finally coming back. There were rumblings of a Man of Steel 2 script being worked on and it was confirmed that he filmed a cameo for the flash.

However, the Hollywood Reporter posted last week that this cameo had been removed and that he was completely out of the Universe. Gunn did a big post saying some of it was true and that some of it wasn’t and unfortunately, we now know what was happening.

Now Josh got a lot of s**t over the weekend for saying that he heard Gunn doesn’t like Cavill but I dunno how else you really chop this up in all honesty. I don’t wanna stir the pot but unless this is a full 100% reboot then there’s not really any way you can say otherwise. If some of the actors from the Old Guard are kept and Cavill isn’t then yeah maybe, he doesn’t but I wanna try and stay away from gossip as much as possible.

However, I do think it’s important to note that Black Adam fought with the execs to bring Henry Cavill back. For this to just be completely overlooked now has probably rubbed him the rock way and Gunn probably feels like he’s stuck between The Rock and a hard place.

I highly doubt that Black Adam is gonna be back any time soon either because of the box office performance and the fact that that post credits scene now means absolutely nothing at all. This will probably annoy a lot of people as well that bought tickets to Black Adam just to see Cavill’s return, and I think it’s a big misfire by Gunn.

Now personally, at this point I don’t think I need another early life Superman movie. Though Gunn has stated that it won’t be an origin story I really just don’t want to see the character finding their feet again, meeting Lois and stuff like that. Supes is at the point now where he should be fighting massive, massive space threats and characters like Brainiac and Mongol. Black Adam as well would have been a big opponent for him but instead we’re going back to his roots for another one of them.

We have the technology now where this stuff can actually be pulled off and I think it’s a massive misfire to not only fire Cavill…from the Gunn but to also go back to this point in Superman’s life. It’s something that’s been done since the 70s in movies, tv shows and comics and I personally think if you want to make Superman gripping for new audiences that you need to move on from this and actually give us something we haven’t seen thousands of times before.

Now we know that Gunn is going to be writing the movie so at the very least the script will probably be good. He is a great writer and director, but I just wish he didn’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water for this because I don’t think that Cavill deserves it.

I actually hope this clears the slate for Henry and that he goes onto become Bond or something because I think in the long run that DC is probably gonna be a s**tshow for a long, long time and it might be better to avoid what’s coming because it could really go either way.

There’s all this talk of a ten-year plan but if it doesn’t immediately hit the ground running then I think that Warner Brothers will do what they always do. They’ll panic, force people to come in and take control of things and then that Ten Year Plan will end up looking like a two year one that has multiple changes.

Now interestingly we know from rumblings over at Marvel that the Thunderbolt movie is gonna have an evil Superman and I really hope that Marvel gives Henry a call if he hasn’t been cast yet. I can actually see a lot of actors jumping ship to Marvel because at the moment DC just seems like a mess and let’s be honest, Marvel could do with some A-listers as part of the new phases.

Anyway, Gunn also talked about how they spoke with Ben Affleck yesterday and that he wants to direct, they just need to find the right project for him.

Now if I was Affleck, again I’d probably just wait for them to establish the universe first cos f**k getting pulled into all this stuff again.

Now I really think that announcements like this with us likely getting a clean slate means that the rest of the DCEU slate is f**ked.

Aquaman 2, The Flash and Shazam 2 just seem like things that are gonna be completely pointless to see now because they’re being sold as shared universe movies for a shared universe that isn’t gonna be around for very long.

I obviously will cover them for this channel but in situations like this I often try and put myself in a space where I think if I’d bother going to see something if it wasn’t my job.

I really don’t think I would bother with Aquaman or Shazam and I’d probably only go and see the Flash for Keaton. So, it’s a weird move to announce this massive reboot.

In our last video we talked about how I think they should’ve ended this movie universe with a movie and got everyone back for one final swan song before it was all put to rest.

I actually think that this might even be the beginning of the end for comic book movies, and they might slowly start to fade into obscurity because of stuff like this. DC fans have invested ten years of their lives into the DCEU at this point and throughout it we’ve been told to be patient and that the changes will pay off. That clearly hasn’t been the case and I don’t know if I have it in me for another 10-year plan that’s gonna end when I turn 45. Marvel has also been underperforming too and with Phase 4 definitely being a step down it seems like this might be the beginning of the end for the genre. Sure, they will still be comic book movies, but I don’t think they’re gonna be the massive juggernauts that we once had. And you can see why too. Moves like this always feel like a gut punch to fans and if a studio doesn’t seem interested in what the fans want then the fans will end up not being interested in what they want either. So, I think this is a bad move especially with how much goodwill there was to DC after he was brought back for Black Adam.

Now earlier in the week there were also rumours that Matt Reeves Batman was going to be brought into the DCU as the main one. This was debunked by Gunn and Matt Reeves and at least that and Joker will probably remain off in their own separate things.

Patty Jenkins and Wonder Woman 3

We also got word back from Patty Jenkins as well who went over what happened with Wonder Woman 3.

She spoke.

Image

So yeah, Jenkins is out but there’s no mention of Gal there.

However, as I’ve been saying in this video, I really think that if Henry is out then that means a full reboot. Everything has to go.

Everything.

I don’t wanna see no side characters from Suicide Squad kept canon if my man Henry is out, burn it all the f**k down.

It’s over and I think that if Henry is out then yeah, just start afresh.

Now I think that fans are gonna be pretty mad with this because it’s not like Cavill was disliked. Every time you do something like this as well you of course run the risk that things won’t work out and people will be annoyed you got rid of someone to put your new version in that isn’t as good.

It’s a big risk and to me it puts DC off on the wrong foot going forward. However, at this point Gunn may just think that the old universe comes with too much baggage and they just wanna get rid.

But will it work or not?

Well, that’s what I’m putting over to you.
