BAD BATCH S2 Episode 5 Breakdown | Ending Explained, STAR WARS Easter Eggs And Things You Missed

The Bad Batch

Alright the Bad Batch Season 2 Episode 5 is now out. In this video we’re gonna be breaking down the new episode, talking about all the star wars easter eggs and the hidden details that you might have missed in the 20 minute entry.

There’s clear allusions to Indiana Jones, The Fifth Element and even a bit of Horizon Zero dawn I think and I can’t wait to get into it. First though blah blah blah thumbs up blah blah blah.

With that out the way, I’m your host Paul aka Benedict Cumberbatch now let’s get into the video.

Wayfinder in The Bad Batch Season 2 Episode 5

Now the episode is called Entombed and we start very much in the same way that we end. We catch the batch in a junkyard which is later mirrored by the destruction that comes at the end. Here we catch Omega and Wrecker hunting for parts which is when she comes across a dial that works as a compass.

This ends up being similar to a Sith Way finder which we saw Kylo using in Rise Of Skywalker.

The Bad Batch

You might notice that Wrecker has even more colour in his uniform this episode and it shows how they’re slowly diverting from the imperial mentality. I have discussed this in our other videos and the Empire very much have the colour dialled down to being grey, black and white. Even Commander Cody who donned orange in the movie had his stuff scaled back to being grey whereas the Bad Batch have gained more colour. This shows how they’re breaking free and becoming rebellious, refusing to conform to the lack of diversity in the Empires uniforms.

Now they also get a compressor and this looks like its from a ATR-6 Assault Transport.

From here we cut to Cid’s parlour to catch Wanda Sykes Phee Genoa.

Know her? Course I don’t know her I just met her.

She’s spinning a yearn to the Weequay and Ithroian who I only learned this week were actually named Ketch and Bolo. This idea of going off on a wild story is very much built into Phees character and come the end of the episode we see her back to her old tricks doing the same thing to Omega. We learn that she’s a pirate that refers to herself as a treasure hunter and this is very much mirrored in Doctor Aphra. Aphra made her debut in Star Wars comics and she’s often described as being Star Wars’ answer to Indiana Jones.

She tells them a story about an Octomorph pulling her down and the way it’s described makes it sound like an offshoot species of a Dianoga. These giant sea spiders grabbed Luke in a New Hope and you even fought one in Shadows Of The Empire.

The Mandalorian easter egg in The Bad Batch

She talks about how she managed to get a pearl from one and these being inside creatures is something that we also see in the case of Krayt Dragons.

They have them in their stomach and at the end of the first episode of Mandalorian Season 2 we saw one being fished out.

After piling the scraps on the holodeck we hear that they’ve got a regulator which was a component in Star Wars used on jetpacks.

However what catches Phees eye is the compass. Devices like these are of course used throughout fiction to progress the story. We’ve seen it in the aforementioned Way finder and also the way this device works reminds me a lot of the one from Raiders Of The Lost Arc. It’s spherical and once the droid shines a light through it reveals certain secrets like Staff Of Ra.

C-3PO and R2-D2 even appeared on wall markings in the movie showing how it’s all connected.

Phee says it’s from the Calder Trinary system which is off the map. She says the best treasures usually aren’t on a map and if you cast your mind back to Attack Of The Clones then you’ll remember that Kamino was removed from the Jedi Archives. This is where the clones were from making them the best treasures and it’s sort of like poetry they rhyme.

Now a trinary system likely means three suns and in a New Hope we saw how Tatooine was located in a binary one.

They land and we can see that the land has been raised and that it’s uninhabitable. Scorch marks line the ground foreshadowing the destructive power that we’ll see unleashed later on. Upon arriving there the compass activates and it starts to lead the way back to the big horse giraffe thingy.

Now shoutouts to our editor Matt for pointing out that the planet is very menacing and it echoes Dathomir which we explored heavily in Fallen Order.

The Bad Batch

The patterns on the trees and overall eeriness mirrors that with there being potential threats around every corner.

The episode pulls heavily from the puzzles in that game, namely the ones that you ran into on Zeffo and Illum.

Weirdly I was watching the Fifth Element the other night and the stones in that all had lined markings on them to denote what it required to activate. These too appear on the handles poking out the wall and it might not be intentional but its just something I noticed.

Dating back thousands of years ago this machine predates the Jedi possibly being around the time of the Jad’haii. This was the order that preceded them and its ancient technology was lost to time. It may be before that but they delve in deeper to the heart of the mountain with the music even riffing on John Williams original Raiders score. He of course composed the music for star wars so his music lends itself nicely to this

The whole place is booby trapped and they get trapped inside before Omega busts out the compass to allow them to go further inside.

As they get further in they’re attacked by giant under dweller creatures who live in the caverns and stalk the landscape outside. Kinda remind me of the spiders from Lost In Space which…sorry for reminding you that movie exists mate, I apologise. The tunnels themselves are also similar to the caverns in Pitch Black and Aliens with these creatures moving in the shadows and chasing them through.

In a nod to the Last Crusade we see Hunter making his way across a tiled floor and this collapses similar to wat it did in the movie. This was then later adapted into the Tomb Raider games and it’s become a staple of treasure hunting movies.

This episode isn’t too full of easter eggs in all honesty and the ones I’ve mentioned before might not even be intentional but bits like this are of course playing on the cliches that have come before.

Either way they have to place the compass into the wall in order to guide the way.

They come upon the centre which activates upon Phee removing the central idol. Again Indiana jones easter eggs in the place with treasures being removed as what often causes things to start up.

Here though we see a death machine walking across the land. When the machine rose up and blasted it’s horns it reminded me a lot of War Of The Worlds, especially because of the fact that it was buried underground for thousands of years.

The idea of destroying landscapes is something that has also been laced throughout the show too with use learning it happened on Dooku’s home and that the empire were threatening to do it to Dessex. They’ve already done it on Kamino too and these attacks foreshadow the death star. Seeing this destroy the planet so easily makes me wonder if the Empire might even come across this machine and harness the power from it. It’s a long shot but seeing this constant repetition of the land being destroyed makes me think they’re foreshadowing it.

Anyway rest in peace little Mel, we barely knew thee. Phee does say that Mel’s databanks are stored on the ship and that it can be fixed up so I’ve no doubt we’ll see the little guy back.

Phee and the gang fight the creatures in side to place the treasure back and doing so destroys the machine.

In an Uncharted-esque ending they don’t really get any treasure but they do make some friends along the way. Working with Phee has left them 0 for 2 but they discovered the legend was real so meh….we had…had a good time I guess.

Now Hunter says its good no one can ever activate the machine but yeah, guess we will see. Phee starts talking about a special chalice possibly giving a little nod to the golden chalice that Indy discovered when searching for the Holy Grail but we’ll not go into that.

What we will get into though is my thoughts on the episode and again this was another really solid one. I know there’s not an overarching story really developing at the moment but I just like these nice little breaks that let us explore the galaxy and get to know what our characters are like. Nice just spending some time with Phee and we also had a cool treasure hunting adventure.

Anyway I’d of course love to hear your thoughts on the episode so make sure you comment below and let me know.
